Leaving QUIT a Legacy
Supporting QUIT in your will is a wonderful way for you to help our work well into the future. We know that your loved ones come first, but there are a number of ways you can remember QUIT in your Will.
If you do not already have a will, we recommend that you should consult a solicitor to ensure that your wishes are properly considered and incorporated into the document as there are a number of formalities that need to be correctly carried out for a will to be valid. You can find a solicitor in your area that specialises in “wills and probate” at www.lawsociety.org by clicking on “find a solicitor”.
If you do already have a Will, you can add a legacy to QUIT with a “codicil” which is an addition or amendment to an existing will. You will need to locate your current will (which may be held by the solicitor that drew it up for you or by your bank) and execute a codicil to be put with your will.
You could include QUIT in your Will in the following ways.
By specifying a set sum to be paid to Quit out of your estate. Please remember that inflation changes the value of money quite dramatically over a long period and a sum quoted in today’s money may be worth much less when it is paid. You can therefore specify that the sum be increased to allow for inflation from the date of the will with an index such as the retail prices index.
By specifying a percentage of the residue of your estate to be paid to QUIT after all your specific bequests have been made.
By leaving a specific item of value to QUIT. This could be, for example, a piece of jewellery.
By leaving assets to QUIT while giving a named person the benefit of the assets during his or her lifetime. This is known as a reversionary bequest.
There could be tax benefits in leaving part of your estate to QUIT as sums paid to a charity will reduce the amount of the estate that is subject to inheritance tax.
You can, of course, change your mind in the future and amend or revoke any provisions you have made in your will.
If you would like to discuss in confidence , how to leave QUIT a legacy please contact the Chief Executive, Paul Bishop at P.Bishop@quit.org.uk
