JAllenThird baby smoke free

"The biggest achievements of my life have been having my children and giving up smoking."

Like many other smokers, Jennifer Allen from Derby didn't think she could stop smoking. She was a smoker from the age of 14 years old. The youngest of six children, she followed in their footsteps when she took up smoking. Her parents were both smokers as well. Yet, when she became pregnant with her first child, she knew she wanted to stop. She gave it an attempt, but then thought that maybe it wasn't as harmful for the baby as everyone made it out to be.

But the baby was born four weeks early drastically underweight and for the first year of her life suffered from convulsion fits. Jennifer's second pregnancy was far more difficult but still she didn't stop. With her third child on the way, Jennifer wanted to stop smoking very much. To give her children the best chance in life she would have to stop smoking.

She rang the NHS Pregnancy Smoking Helpline (0800 169 9 169), and an advisor helped her devise a plan to stop. The advisor gave her tips and advice and scheduled callbacks to help encourage her along the way. She carried her baby smoke-free throughout the rest of her pregnancy and gave birth to her healthiest child yet.
