Press Release

March 2008

QUIT POSTER WINS MARKETING AWARD

A thought provoking poster campaign launched by QUIT®, the UK charity that helps smokers to stop, has received a prestigious marketing award.

The Smoking Stakes poster, created by Saatchi & Saatchi X, beat off competition from two other shortlisted campaigns to win the "Best Writing for Direct Communications" category at the Marketing Communications Consultants Association (MCCA) Best Awards 2008.

The poster appeared in independent bookmakers in London, Manchester, Middlesex and Essex in June and July 2007 to help highlight the risks smokers take with their health when they smoke.

Bookmakers were one of the many public places in England that became smokefree on July 1st. Other venues covered by the legislation include restaurants, pubs, bars, offices and factories.

QUIT’s Chief Executive Steve Crone said: “The poster was a great initiative to target male smokers. It was designed to make smokers think about the effects of their habit, and most importantly signpost them toward the help available if they want to quit.”

Ant Melder, Copywriter, said: “Smoking is an extremely emotive issue that affects us all. We were really excited to be given the challenge of helping people quit. A key part of everything we do at Saatchi X is addressing people in the most appropriate environment, in the most timely, relevant and compelling way: in this case, it was when they’re thinking about smoking or – even better - just as they are about to light up a cigarette.

Smokers who want support to stop smoking can call the Quitline 0800 002200 for free help and advice from a trained counsellor. Or email stopsmoking@quit.org.uk or visit www.quit.org.uk.
