WIMBLEDON DAD SWAPS CIGARETTES FOR TEXT MESSAGES
A new stop smoking text message service helped Paul Oliver (44) from Wimbledon successfully ditch the fags after noticing smoking was making him short of breath.
Paul quit a 20-a-day habit in March this year and enrolled in the txt2stop service – a new initiative to help smokers quit through motivational texts and support.
Paul said: “I started smoking when I was very young and had tried giving up many times in the past. But this time I was determined to show myself and others that it is possible. The txt2stop text messages were very useful and helped keep me motivated.”
Paul added: “The best thing about stopping smoking is that I can breath better and I don’t smell – my kids are not moaning at me that my breath smells when I go to kiss them! I can taste food better and I don’t have a dry mouth every time I wake up. I now don’t have to worry about having to go outside all the time for a cigarette and I’ve saved a lot of money!”
Dr Cari Free, txt2stop Principal Investigator said: “We’re looking for 5,000 volunteers to take part in this exciting trial initiative. Smokers selected for the trial will be asked to set a quit date and then they’ll receive text messages for six months. You can also still use any other form of stop smoking support such as nicotine replacement therapy too.”
txt2stop is a trial of stop smoking text messages. To volunteer, text SMOKE to 65151. There is no charge for text messages related to the txt2stop programme. You must be 16 or over to participate. For more information visit www.txt2stop.org
