QUIT Now: QUIT’s Smoking and Mental Health Project
| |
QUIT in partnership with the Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health and funded by Cancer Research UK have developed the Smoking and Mental Health Project. An exciting new initiative providing specialist, tailor made stop smoking support to smokers with severe and enduring mental health problems through proactive telephone counselling. |
| |
Research has shown that smokers with mental health problems do want to stop smoking but also that they need the right kind of support. The telephone counselling service has been developed to enhance existing cessation services and address the specific needs of smokers with mental health problems. |
All health professionals can refer community mental health patients onto the QUIT Now Project using the referral form.
This can be done by: |
| |
- Calling 0800 00 22 00 whilst with the smoker. The counsellor will then make arrangements with the smoker for the first pro-active call to be made. Referral form to be faxed to QUIT following the call.
- Fax completed referral form to 0207 251 1661. Once received by QUIT the referral will be passed to the counselling team and a counsellor will contact the smoker within 24 hours.
Once the referral has been made QUIT counsellors will provide an intensive proactive telephone counselling service to the smoker. A provision of six telephone counselling sessions will be made available which will be diarised at appropriate and convenient times through the quit attempt. |
As part of the project QUIT are also offering free training to Mental Health Workers. This training (Level 1) involves raising the issue of smoking with patients/clients, providing appropriate information and referring to specialist services. |
